With the catastrophe that Panchkula witnessed on the 25th August, it is only natural that the Controversial rapist Baba and his Gundas be finally exposed now. The conviction of Ram Rahim in the rape case on 25th has been considered a historic decision by the honorable court; which received global appreciation. However, the hot topic of the town questions the prevalence of illiteracy and delayed justice in the country.

About Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim Insan
Dera Sacha Sauda which was established in 1948 by Shah Mastana Ji, who’s throne was taken over by Gurmeet Singh in 1990 when he was just 23. He changed his name from Gurmeet Singh to Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim Insan, as a notion of respect to all religions and ultimate goal of humanity. He claims to have about 6 crore followers around the world, with maximum followers in Haryana and Punjab. Contrary to what is brought to light now, Gurmeet Singh’s Dera is a non-profit social welfare and spiritual organization.

Ever since his crowning, the Dera head has been surrounded by a thick air of controversies.

Rape Charges
Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim Insan first faced rape charges against him from two of his own female followers, who ‘worshipped’ the self proclaimed ‘Godman’. The courageous victims, inspite of knowing their fate in case their identity would be revealed, wrote an anonymous letter in the name of the then Honorable Prime Minister, Dr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee. A case was then registered against Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim in 2002, after 3 years of continuous heinous crime suffered by the sadhvis.

CBI’s Historic Verdict
The mighty power of the rapist and support from blind followers in huge numbers delayed justice for 15 years. On August 25, 2017 in a historic verdict laid down by honorable Justice Jagjeet Singh, Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim Insan was convicted of rape charges.

Due to security reasons, the dera chief was not taken to the court; instead a special CBI hearing was set up in Rohtak jail to pronounce his sentence. The convict was awarded a 10 year jail term for the atrocities he bestowed upon the complainant. In a surprising move, lawyers confirmed that the Judge had pronounced a sentence for 10 year jail in each of the two cases, which will not run concurrently. In the fortunate evening of 28th August 2017, the rapist was put behind bars as qaidi no 1997.

Destruction Caused
In spite of the already imposed curfew and section 144 in the Panchkula, Sirsa among other cities of Punjab and Haryana, Baba’s gunda’s made Panchkula witness the worst violence in its history since inception. Cars and two-wheelers were lit to fire opposing court’s pronouncement; government buildings pelted with stones, hotels and showrooms exposed to fire turning the entire city into a post war scene. The police, army, CRPF and paramilitary retaliated with tear gas bombs, lathi charges, water cannons and finally resorted to ‘shoot-at-sight’ orders. The uninvited violence killed 39 people.

Other Pending Charges
Ram Rahim has N number of charges against him. He was charged with murder conspiracy of Dera manager Ranjit Singh in July 2002. A Sirsa-based journalist who exposed the Dera head’s illicit activities, Chatterpati was killed on October 23, 2002. About 400 men became victims of castration inside dera “to achieve God through guidance of guru”. In 2007, Sikh’s raised a voice against him for wearing a dress similar to that of Sikh Guru Gobind Singh.

With his conviction, more and more cases are coming to light, which reveal the devil that was hiding amongst us in the face of God.

The havoc has left behind indelible scars that cannot be healed. For a person who does not even deserve to be called an ‘Insan’, it would be a dire insult to Lord Ram and learned Saint Rahim if we continue to call him by this name.
